Located within the Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority area, the site area is 163 hectares. The Sabarmati River runs along the west side while the eastern side has a road and a village in the middle. The second phase is designed for 1200 students and support staff. The proposed hostel is for undergraduate and postgraduate students including a mess catering to 1200 students. The hostel block will have single rooms, double occupancy rooms and triple-seated rooms, thus optimizing the room sizes, circulation and common areas.
Hostel block:
Contextually, the design of the hostel block responds to Master plan recommendation using the courtyard typology at a varied form and scale. The design is based on a typical shaded street pattern intercepted with bridges and interactive open spaces for the hot and dry climate of Gandhinagar. The three phases of the hostel block are designed around a large central courtyard linking to the academic block. The proposed four-storeyed hostel blocks are linked at the corridor level on the second floor and these links form interactive spaces. The common facilities are strategically located on this floor overlooking the large green below.
Open green and pedestrian pathways lead to the public spaces which are skirting around the roads abutting the central vista for the desired view. Service entry has been restricted to the peripheral road away from the public areas. The rich landscape and green along the pathways interlink the small and large spaces creating a comfortable pedestrian-friendly development and evoke a vibrant community life in the proposed residential zone. Dining mess, recreation and community plazas are interlinked with shops. Semi-covered cycle parks have direct access to the main track.
